It Makes Sense Only In India

I've been thinking lately, as I'm sure millions of other Indians have been... just what do we pay taxes for?

Think of this. India is a country, that claims to be a nuclear power and that claims to be a force to recon with in the IT/ITES sectors. Yet, the IQ-Challenged gentlemen who govern the nation cannot ensure that every urban (in the capital, no less!) is provided with electricity and water! Our grayMatter-Deficient finance minister has borrowed from all the developed nations when it come to putting together a set of laws for income tax calculation and collection. What this nincompoopish action didn't think of was that these nations provide the basics for their citizens! Be it a police force, governance, basic amenities like water and electricity, proper education and roads among others.

With what face then did our darling coke-bottom lenses finance minister decide to levy all these taxes for then? We all know that politicians are shameless pieces of extra terrestrial excreta of the smelliest kind... but this is a step ahead even for them.

Electricity is not enough, nor is it controlled. Voltage fluctuations ensure appliances regularly conk off. Will the electricity department pay for them? Water that looks and smells like sewer water is what comes through the pipes. Everyone is forced to install expensive reverse osmosis water purifiers. What does the DJB do? The police and paramilitary forces are pathetic, with uneducated, uncultured, louts, touts and bullies from every cesspool in the country joining up at all levels, from the beat stalking constable to senior administrators. Roads are in shameful conditions with most roads flooding and collapsing every monsoon.

What I'd like to know is... just what are these elected representatives doing to earn their keep. That most politicians are corrupt, self centred, selfish, uneducated, bullies and overall severely deficient in even the most rudimentary forms of intelligence... we know. Point is, most policiticians the world over are the same. However, they have some semblence of control and shame. So while they do fill their pockets, they ensure that some development happens.

India however, is a different story. Its been over 50 years of independence, yet basic amenities continue to elude us.

So... why do we pay taxes?
