Indian Education
Here we are again with my favourite bug bear... our beloved government babus (read 'clerks' or 'civil services'). This time its about the wonderfully idiotic aspects in the brand new examination marking system they've come up with.
Most people need a snort of cocaine or a few deep drags of specially cultivated marijuana to achieve certain levels of thoughtlessness, stupidity or professional incompetence. Not so with our esteemed babus. If I didn't know better, I would have said they've been specially bred for the purpose of gubernatorial glitches. If I let my imagination run a little towards the wild side, I'd think of a conspiracy where nationwide tests pin point those individuals on the lower end of everything mental and ensure they get through our civil services examinations. I will admit however, that a few genuinely talented individuals do get through.
"All the better to manipulate you my dear", said the big bad wolf to little red riding hood, and grinned, showing sharp yellow teeth, stained with the rotting shreds of previous victims and foul with the corrupt taint of long crunched bones.
I'll leave you to interpret that last bit.
Anyhow, getting to the point. Apparently, spellings do not matter any more. As A.M. Wattal, (respectable) Principal of Springdales School, Delhi explicitly opines in a report in the India Today, as long as the subject matter is understood, why do spellings matter?
Eye wud tend tu agri wit dat and eevin admyr the ekstrim kurej reekwayerd in saing sumthing sow potenshialee eksplociv. aftar ol, vy do spelingz mater, thai'r jest wurdz! alekzander cryd ven he thot their wuz nuthing mor to conker... A.M. Wattal vil newer hav that problem.
According to Mr. Pavnesh Kumar, CBSE Examination Controller, "The examination system has become more scientific and objective over the years...". I wonder what will happen in a few years. Lets take a sample question:
Then
Q3. In the play "Hamlet" written by William Shakespeare, examine the plot and discuss in your own words how the protagnist struggles with his conscience, and how his decision affects the final outcome. (40 marks)
Now
Q3. In the play "Hamlet" written by William Shakespeare, examine the plot and choose the answer that best fits how the protagnist struggles with his conscience, and how his decision affects the final outcome. (40 marks)
a. Go dude!!
b. Wicked
c. Loser man
As usual, I will put it down to political ineptitude and the presence of uneducated louts in positions of social, moral and intellectual responsibility. I have a four year old daughter. I'm wondering what will happen in a decade or so, when such people make decisions that will change her future.
